About Insulin (Fasting)
An insulin in blood test measures the amount of insulin in a sample of your blood. Insulin is a hormone that your pancreas makes.
It helps move blood glucose (blood sugar) from your bloodstream into your cells where it's used for energy.
Normally, insulin and blood glucose levels rise and fall together. Blood glucose levels increase after you eat, and when blood glucose rises, your pancreas releases more insulin into your blood.
Serious problems can develop if your pancreas doesn't make the right amount of insulin at the right time. The test can be used to help diagnose and monitor diabetes, and it may also help detect rare insulin-producing tumors of the pancreas.

Useful for
Find out the cause of hypoglycemia (low blood glucose)
Help evaluate signs of insulin resistance, usually as part of a panel of tests rather than on its own
Guide treatment decisions for type 2 diabetes
Monitor how well pancreatic islet cell transplantation surgery is working
Help diagnose and monitor diabetes
Help check for rare insulin-producing tumors of the pancreas

Interpretation
If your insulin level is high and your blood glucose is normal or a little above normal for you, you may have insulin resistance.
If your insulin level is high or normal and your blood glucose is low for you, you may have hypoglycemia from too much insulin.
If your insulin level is low and your blood glucose is high for you, it may mean that your pancreas can't make enough insulin.
